EDITORIAL SERVICES
Manuscript Editing
Understanding the different types of editing (and knowing which one your manuscript needs) is one of the most important investments you can make in your book. Each stage of the editing process serves a distinct purpose, and working with the right service at the right time is what transforms a good draft into a publish-ready manuscript.
Manuscript Assessment
A broad, top-level look at your manuscript to identify overarching structural issues and determine its readability. Includes a detailed assessment letter and minor margin notes where warranted. Highly recommended for first-time authors and those who have never had their full manuscript read by a professional.
Substantive/Developmental Editing
Identifies and improves upon key structural elements of a manuscript. Unlike an assessment, a substantive edit may involve heavy document markups and deep restructuring of story elements including pacing, conflict, and plot inconsistencies.
Line/Style Editing
Focuses on correcting issues at the paragraph and sentence level. Identifies, corrects, and makes recommendations for awkward phrasing, overused words, and clarity. Improves dialogue and helps the writer “show don’t tell.” Should be done after the writer has a cohesive plot and story.
Copyediting
Addresses grammar and usage issues, spelling and punctuation errors, and word choice. Focused on rhythm and flow and ensuring accuracy. Less concerned with improving story or style. Checks for consistency with timelines, plot, and character.
Proofreading
The final phase of the manuscript editing process. Double-checks the manuscript for typos, spelling, and layout issues. Does not assess or improve style or subject matter. Checks consistency in chapter formatting and performs document cleanup.
Authenticity/Sensitivity Review
A professional review of your manuscript for authentic, accurate, and respectful representation of marginalized identities, cultures, and experiences. Includes a formal written report with sourced references and manuscript margin notes where warranted. See full details below.

An authenticity review, often called a sensitivity read, is a professional read of your manuscript with a focus on authentically and accurately portraying people, cultures, and situations outside of your lived experience or the dominant cultural narrative. It’s not about policing your story. It’s about expanding your potential readership and making sure the work you’ve written lands the way you intend it to with the readers you want to reach.
